Kerttuli School (or, St Gertrud's School) was founded during the final years of the Russian regime, and became Turku's first distinguished large-scale public elementary school upon its construction in 1912. Throughout its eight decades of continuous operation, Kerttuli has been a source of education and guidance to thousands of Turku children, including former Finnish president Mauno Koivisto. Today, 250 pupils aged 7-13 (comprising the lower Finnish elementary school level) study at Kerttuli, under the care of about fifteen instructors. While approximately a half of students are taught in a Finnish-language environment, Kerttuli offers immersion groups to interested parents wherein native Finnish-speaking pupils receive their education in Swedish--the second official language of bilingual Finland. Available to children in all grades represented by Kerttuli, more than one hundred students are presently enrolled in our Swedish immersion groups. In addition, pupils from both groups receive foreign-language education to aid them in forming a basic understanding of the English and/or German languages. Kerttuli also offers special music-oriented teaching, providing students a higher level of musical education as compared to those enrolled in our standard curriculums. With a school choir, the music-oriented teaching is available to students in grades 2-6. We thank you for your interest in Kerttuli School. If you are a teacher interested in forming an e-mail-based pen-pal program between your students and ours, or if this brief summary has left you with any general questions or comments about our institution, please do not hesistate to contact us.
